A Highly Successful Meeting with Simon Burrows (ICB) and Greg Smith MP

On 18 September, Dementia Carers Respite, based in Hyde Heath, was pleased to hold a highly productive meeting in Reading with Sam Burrows, Chief System Development & Engagement Officer at the Integrated Care Board (ICB), and Greg Smith MP.

The meeting provided an important opportunity to showcase the charity’s work and discuss the vital role it plays in supporting unpaid carers of people living with dementia.

Greg Smith MP opened the meeting by providing Sam Burrows with an overview of Dementia Carers Respite, highlighting the charity’s purpose, its commitment to supporting dementia carers, and the importance of accessible respite services within the local community.

Walid Marzouk and Dr Louise Gill then provided a more detailed presentation on the charity’s work, including its service provision, operational model and internal processes. They also outlined a number of the charity’s transformational projects and discussed the resources and infrastructure that may be required to respond effectively to a potential increase in demand for dementia respite services.

We were particularly pleased to have the opportunity to engage directly with the ICB and to demonstrate the significant contribution that Dementia Carers Respite makes in providing much-needed support and respite to those caring for people living with dementia.

The discussions were wide-ranging, constructive and focused on practical opportunities for collaboration. We are delighted that a number of positive actions were identified, including ways in which the ICB can help strengthen awareness of, and access to, the support available to dementia carers for respite.

We look forward to building on this important meeting and continuing to work collaboratively with our partners to ensure that carers receive the support and respite they need.

Fergal O’Brien Golf Day Raises Funds for Dementia Carers Respite

Following on the heels of a fantastic golf and dinner fundraiser held on 6 August at Harewood Downs near Amersham, Fergal O’Brien Racing held its annual Charity Golf Day in support of Dementia Carers Respite, its Charity of the Year for 2025/2026.

On 1 September, more than 20 teams of four enthusiastic golfers gathered at Brickhampton Court Golf Club for Fergal O’Brien Racing’s third Charity Golf Day — enjoying a great day of golf while raising much-needed funds for our charity.

Brickhampton Court is set in 200 acres of beautiful, rolling Gloucestershire countryside, nestled between Gloucester and the spa town of Cheltenham. Established in 1994, the complex boasts fantastic golf courses, a driving range and a welcoming clubhouse, making it the perfect setting for a charity golf day.

The golfers were predominantly racehorse owners, with jockeys Tom Broughton, Jack Hogan and Liam Harrison also taking part and adding to the racing connection.

The weather was absolutely perfect, the golf was competitive, and the food was delicious. The raffle tickets sold like hot cakes, with a fantastic selection of prizes on offer, and the auction was also a great success.

All in all, it was a wonderful day. While we are still waiting for the final figures, we are delighted to believe that the event raised around £3,000 for Dementia Carers Respite.

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Chris Coley for organising such a fantastic event and to Max Kendrick for his invaluable support.

Finally, a very special thank you to Fergal O’Brien. His commitment to Dementia Carers Respite has been, and continues to be, nothing short of fantastic. We are incredibly grateful for his ongoing support and for choosing us as his Charity of the Year to make such a difference to the lives of people caring for loved ones with dementia.

Thank you to everyone who took part, donated, sponsored, bought raffle tickets, bid in the auction or simply helped make the day such a success.

We are hugely grateful to you all.
